March 7, 2002 Take the Payola and Run! Check out this LA Times story about some uptight radio exec thinking she is blowing the whistle on radio payola (payoffs to radio stations to guarantee airplay of songs). Where the fuck have you been for the past fifty years lady? According to this radio exec nobody, "The way it works now at urban radio is that [middlemen] give cash under the table to the program director at the station and then kick back money to the vice president of promotion at the record label." |

If this is the way it works, I have one question. Why is the station kicking back money to some label suit and tie? If I were a radio executive, I would take the payola, not play their (the labels') crappy music and tell them to go fuck themselves! Stick it to the labels like this and we will see how often they will try the payola garbage again. By accepting the payola, the stations are just playing a losing game. Sphinx |
